The Corona pandemic has shown in various facets how important the advancing digitalisation of society is. Already in recent years, the rise of online commerce has had a profound impact on the retail and logistics real estate sector. But more recently, data centres have emerged as another interesting asset class with a risk / return profile that lies between real estate and infrastructure assets. Rising data consumption, further fuelled by home offices, video streaming, online gaming, e-commerce, etc., has once again highlighted the growth potential of this segment.

Measured against its population, Switzerland already has an extremely high density of data centres, the second highest in Europe after the Netherlands. The 93 colocation data centres identified in a recent study by CBRE Switzerland have an area of at least 154,000 sq m, which is equivalent to around 22 football pitches.
