Western Australia’s retail centre market is set to undergo a radical transformation over the coming five years. What is driving this change? And what will the retail centres of the future look like for the State?
The implementation of the WA Planning Commission’s ‘Activity Centres Policy’ which came into effect in 2010 has dramatically changed Perth’s retail development landscape; floor space caps have been removed, and focus has shifted to creating ‘town centres’ that provide far more than just a retail offering. Developments of this nature are commonplace across the globe, leaving WA with a lot of ground to make up in the wake of the planning reforms. Such changes will increase WA’s retail offering to a level comparable with the eastern States, and indeed begin to elevate its retail centres to a global standard.
